30 Years Ago Today – CATS Opened on Broadway!
This is my favorite “Daily’s” article to date for personal reasons. As I’m typing this, I realize how impossible it is for me for convey the depth of joy, happy memories, and feelings of warmth I have over this play. When my daughter was just four years old, we took her to see this production. She fell in love with this musical so much that we purchased the soundtrack and a VHS tape of it for her. In no time, she had memorized the music, learned the choreography, and routinely performed the pieces for us using our living room as her stage. Such marvelous memories!
The character of Mr. Misstoffelees became a family favorite, so much so in fact that we ended up naming one of our kittens after him. A few years after that, I was working as a theatrical makeup artist and hair stylist in the city we were living in at the time and would work with whatever traveling company was in town. During one of the productions, I was fortunate enough to get know and work with one of the guys that played Mr. Misstoffelees on Broadway. Needless to say, that earned me extra cool points with my daughter!
Cats is the genius work of Andrew Lloyd Webber, based off of ”Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot, which yes, we own a copy in case you were wondering. The musical won many awards, including a Tony for Best Musical. The London production ran for twenty-one years and the Broadway production ran for eighteen. To date, Cats is the second longest running show in Broadway history. Below are two wonderful videos: Grizabella the Glamour Cat singing “Memories” and an overview of the play. Enjoy!
